Botanist - Temporary

The Wildlife and Botany Program of our Forestry Division has a temporary opening for a qualified Botanist to help survey Sierra Pacific Industries' forestlands in northern California for rare plants. The successful applicant will be based at our Redding-area office. They will work with another experienced botanist. Occasionally, there will be a need for overnight travel to remote forest sites throughout the company's California ownership in the Coast, Klamath, Cascade, and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges.

Primary Duties Include:

  • Plant identification of California flora to family, genus, and species.
  • Surveying Timber Harvest Plan areas for rare plant species.
  • Measuring and recording topographic and geological characteristics of a site.
  • Measuring canopy using various instruments.
  • Navigating forest roads using a map and GPS.
  • Performing potentially arduous physical field work in a safe manner such as hiking in rough terrain, conducting surveys outdoors, and working in remote locations in all types of weather.

Qualifications Include:

  • College coursework in botany, biology, forestry, or related natural resource field. Course work will include general botany or biology, plant taxonomy, and plant ecology. Desirable coursework includes soil science, geology, and plant physiology.
  • One season of botanical field work is desirable.
  • Ability to identify plant species in the focus geographic area

  • Map and photo interpretation ability. Prior GPS use desirable.
  • Computer skills - Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint)

  • Personable with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid Driver License.

This is an hourly position. This position is only temporary - filling in for a team member on leave - approximately 3 to 4 months. Expected start date is early April 2012. Due to the temporary classification of the position, it will not qualify for benefits.

Anderson Sawmill Division (Anderson, CA)
Truck Driver - Lumber Sierra Pacific Industries, Anderson Truck Shop will be accepting applications for the position of Lumber Truck Driver. The driver will be paid on a percentage of the revenue. Must be 18 years of age. Require two years of verifiable lumber flatbed experience. Tarping experience preferred. Applications must be filled out on the plant site.
